The Heartbeat International Pacemaker Bankof Santa Cruz, Boliviain partnership with the Rotary Clubs ofTampa Downtown Daybreak and Urbari (Bolivia)In 2009 the Rotary Club of Tampa Downtown Daybreak renewed its sponsorship with the Rotary Club Urbari and the Santa Cruz, Bolivia Pacemaker Bank, a program through which impoverished Bolivians in need of heart rhythm therapy receive free pacemakers, medical care and follow up. Santa Cruz , in the southwest of Bolivia , is in the epicenter of the causative agent of heart rhythm disease, Chagas Disease, a parasitic disease that ultimately affects the heart and conduction system. 3.7 of the 9.0 million population of Bolivia are at risk for Chagas, which prospers in straw and mud huts thereby disproportionately infecting impoverished patients.
The Tampa Downtown Daybreak / Urbari Rotary sponsored pacemaker bank has saved the lives of 89 poor Bolivians through the provision of cardiac pacemakers, medical care and life time follow up care – all at no charge for patients unable to afford such therapy.
The program embodies Rotary ideals of providing health to the under served, and fosters international understanding and goodwill.
